Nirvana was an American rock band that was formed by singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting being Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990.
Nirvana was the best thing to happen to rock music in the 90's. Kurt Cobain only played powerchords and (deliberately) poor solos, but the melodies he found certainly didn;t come from any rock or metal band. His lyrics were usually great, too. Grunge, like Punk, didn't actually kill rock music.
